چکیده

Introduction Domestication of food producing animals has led to the desire by humans to control reproduction so as to enhance production of the products (e.g., meat) from these animals. Domestication of cattle is estimated to have started about 10,000 years ago (Bradley et al., 1998). Controlled reproduction by regulating mating patterns, through use of natural breeding, has long been practiced by those who manage food producing animals. The utilization of reproductive technologies has, therefore, evolved in food animal production so as to allow producers further control over reproduction. These technologies allow for genetic improvement through increasing the selection differential with use of the most elite genetically proven individuals by mating the “best to the best”, reducing the generation interval by decreasing the age at which breeding commences, and increasing the frequency at which these elite individuals can produce offspring (by harvesting eggs, spermatozoa, or embryos).

The Impact of Using Artificial Insemination versus Natural Service for Florida Beef Cows

Introduction Estrous synchronization and artificial insemination (AI) are reproductive management tools that have been available to beef producers for over 40 years. Synchronization of the estrous cycle has the potential to shorten the calving season, increase calf uniformity, and enhance the possibilities for utilizing AI. Artificial insemination allows producers the opportunity to infuse supe...

Genetics and genomics of reproductive performance in dairy and beef cattle.

Excellent reproductive performance in both males and females is fundamental to profitable dairy and beef production systems. In this review we undertook a meta-analysis of genetic parameters for female reproductive performance across 55 dairy studies or populations and 12 beef studies or populations as well as across 28 different studies or populations for male reproductive performance. A pleth...

Cow-calf reproductive, genetic, and nutritional management to improve the sustainability of whole beef production systems.

Optimizing efficiency in the cow-calf sector is an important step toward improving beef sustainability. The objective of the study was to use a model to identify the relative roles of reproductive, genetic, and nutritional management in minimizing beef production systems' environmental impact in an economically viable, socially acceptable manner. An economic and environmental diet optimizer was...

Genetics of reproductive performance in seasonal calving beef cows and its association with performance traits.

Due primarily to a lack of phenotypic data, little research has been undertaken on the genetics of reproductive performance in beef cattle. The objective of this study was to quantify, using data from the Irish national cattle herd, the contribution of additive genetics to phenotypic differences in reproductive performance in beef cattle and to investigate whether routinely available early pred...
